چکیده

Context. Stellar companions of accreting neutron stars in ultra compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) are hydrogen-deficient. Their helium or C/O accretion discs are strongly X-ray irradiated. Both the chemical composition and irradiation determine the disc stability with respect to thermal and viscous perturbations. At shorter periods, UCXBs are persistent, whereas longer-period systems are mostly transient. Aims. To understand this behaviour one has to derive the stability criteria for X-ray irradiated hydrogen-poor accretion discs. Methods. We use a modified and updated version of the Dubus et al. code describing time-dependent irradiated accretion discs around compact objects. Results. We obtained the relevant stability criteria and compared the results to observed properties of UCXBs Conclusions. Although the general trend in the stability behaviour of UCXBs is consistent with the prediction of the disc instability model, in a few cases the inconsistency of theoretical predictions with the system observed properties is weak enough to be attributed to observational and/or theoretical uncertainties. Two systems might require the presence of some amount of hydrogen in the donor star.

On the possibility of a helium white dwarf donor in the presumed ultracompact binary 2 S 0918 – 549

2S 0918–549 is a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) with a low optical to X-ray flux ratio. Probably it is an ultracompact binary with an orbital period shorter than 60 min. Such binaries cannot harbor hydrogen rich donor stars. As with other (sometimes confirmed) ultracompact LMXBs, 2S 0918–549 is observed to have a high neon-to-oxygen abundance ratio (Juett et al. 2001) which has been used to argue...

VLT spectroscopy and non-LTE modeling of the C/O-dominated accretion disks in two ultracompact X-ray binaries

Aims. We present new medium-resolution high-S/N optical spectra of the ultracompact low-mass X-ray binaries 4U 0614+091 and 4U 1626-67, taken with the ESO Very Large Telescope. They are pure emission line spectra and the lines are identified as due to C ii-iv and O ii-iii. Methods. Line identification is corroborated by first results from modeling the disk spectra with detailed non-LTE radiatio...

On the formation of neon-enriched donor stars in ultracompact X-ray binaries

We study the formation of neon-enriched donor stars in ultracompact X-ray binaries (Porb < 80 min) and show that their progenitors have to be low-mass (0.3–0.4)M “hybrid” white dwarfs (with CO cores and thick helium mantles). Stable mass transfer is possible if in the initial stages of mass exchange mass is lost from the system, taking away the specific orbital angular momentum of the accretor ...

CSS100603:112253111037: a heliumrich dwarf nova with a 65min orbital period

We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy of the dwarf nova CSS100603: 112253−111037. Its optical spectrum is rich in helium, with broad, double-peaked emission lines produced in an accretion disc. We measure a line flux ratio He I λ5876/Hα = 1.49 ± 0.04, a much higher ratio than is typically observed in dwarf novae. The orbital period, as derived from the radial velocity of the line wings,...

The evolution of ultracompact X-ray binaries

Context. Ultracompact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) typically consist of a white dwarf donor and a neutron star or black hole accretor. The evolution of UCXBs and very low mass ratio binaries in general is poorly understood. In particular, the dynamical behavior of an accretion disk extending to a large radius (relative to the orbit) is unclear. Aims. We investigate the evolution of UCXBs in order to ...
